| Peaks Island is about a twenty-minute ferry ride from Portland, which is Maine's largest port city. Peaks Island is 720 acres in size. It is fairly well populated, with most people living in the area that faces Portland (referred to by islanders as "down front"). More houses are spread out along the coast (known as "back shore"), with recent building occurring in the center of the island. The coast is fairly rugged and rocky. Inland are hilly open forests, with some wet lowlands overgrown with vines and underbrush. Blueberries can be found in some areas of the rocky hills, and raspberries in the lower coastal areas. We have a gas station, a laundromat, a branch of the Portland Public Library, a grocery store, two restaurants, a B&B, a bike rental, a gift shop, a coffee shop, two realtors, a kayak rental, a kayak excursion company, an umbrella cover museum (the world's only), a daycare, two churches, a greenhouse, a VFW Post, The Lions Club, AA and Weight Watchers™ meetings, as well as many cottage industries and an active art community. | ![]() photo by Carol LeBlanc | |
